Sierre Zinal: American runner Sophia Laukli denies Kenyan podium sweep

Kenyan runners swept 5 of the six podium spots on the Fiftieth version of Sierre Zinal on Saturday, with American runner Sophia Laukli dashing to the 3rd–fastest-ever end at the girls’s facet in 2:53:17, (most effective route file holder, Swiss runner Maude Mathys has ever long past sooner, in 2019 and 2022). At the males’s facet, Philemon Kiriago of Kenya celebrated his twenty first birthday via profitable in 2:27:27, bettering on his fifth-place end in 2022 and dashing to the second one fastest-ever males’s time.

Girls’s race

With robust contenders like Kisang, Nienke Brinkman of the Netherlands and Swiss runner Judith Wyder in competition, the ladies’s race was once to begin with up for grabs, and Kisang set out main strongly, adopted via Monica Florea of Romania, and Kenya’s Joyce Muthoni. Via the midpoint, Laukli had claimed the highest place, with Muthoni following her and Kisang pushing arduous in 3rd.

Fan favourites Brinkman and American Allie McLaughlin took 6th and 8 positions, respectively. Pre-race, Laukli shared with press that she had no thought how the race would prove. “I’ve truly by no means carried out a race like this,” she stated. “This can be a whole thriller, and that’s a laugh.”

Males’s race

Kenyan compatriots Patrick Kipngeno and Kiriago took the lead from the beginning of the race, adopted via a chase pack that incorporated American Eli Hemming, France’s Thibaut Baronian, and Swiss runner Remi Bonnet. Kenya’s Kevin Kibet started to transport up throughout the pack, and an hour into the race had firmly claimed 3rd position. 

With 8 kilometres to head, Kiriago made a decisive transfer into the lead, completing robust in 2:27:27 (most effective Spain’s Jornet has ever run sooner, surroundings the route file of two:25:35 in 2019). Kipnengo hung directly to 2d position and closed in 2:28:50, and Kibet had a dash to the end to carry off France’s Sylvain Cachard, completing in 2:34:16 and a couple of:34:22 respectively.
